Wells
Inadequate and unsafe water supplies are the source of
Much illness and death in Ethiopia. Drilling of wells to
Provide safe water supplies using conventional technology is
cost prohibitive for most rural families or communities. Heart
for Ethiopia has recently discovered a manual well-drilling
process that can be performed by local volunteer labor with
somewhat primitive locally made tools.
The drilling process had already
been successfully applied in several other countries. Now wells
have been completed in Ethiopia by the manual drilling process
and are supplying adequate quantities of clean safe water in remote rural
villages. We have found that by using this manual process, a well
can be drilled and fitted with a manual pump for a cost of
only $200 (cost of materials only).
Heart for Ethiopia has contracted with Addis Kidan Association to
furnish a trained technician to organize rural groups to manually
drill wells to provide safe water supplies in their areas. The contract
also provides for purchase and maintenance of basic tools,
transportation, equipment and materials. The ultimate goal is to
develop trained rural groups who will themselves initiate, complete, and maintain
the established water supplies utilizing materials furnished through
the Addis Kidan Association.
Tree
Seedlings
The
Ethiopians and occupying forces have harvested most of the trees
that are suitable for lumber and have not supported reforestation
programs other than eucalyptus trees, which are more suitable
for fire wood. The Corporation will contract with Addis Kidan
Church association to encourage propagation of seedlings and
planting of hardwood trees by volunteers. A test effort for
this work has already begun and has been successful. The Corporation
shall design and support a more organized program based on the
test effort.
Other Development Progams
Heart for Ethiopia periodically , as funds become available, supports programs that have been identified as high priority needs by the Addis Kidan Association (our Ethiopian partners). These include, but are not limited to, clinics, Individual medical treatment, kindergartens, literacy progams, adult education , micro lending (Unsecured small loans/grants for encouraging small business development), and program equipment/facility/management).
